Activities at the Organic Farming Systems (BFS) Research and Education Group are geared towards the development and transfer of new scientific knowledge to analyze, design, and evaluate sustainable agricultural farming systems where natural ecological processes are utilized to the maximum possible.
Sustainable agricultural farming systems comprise both organic and integrated farms, but the emphasisis is on organic farming systems.
Research is focused on mixed animal and plant production systems and specialised plant production systems (if possible in collaboration with animal production systems).

BFS is part of WaCASA, a unique research and education initiative to develop and apply systems analysis approaches agricultural systems to the urgent and pressing problems of today.

Education
Our teaching activities are directed towards two main aspects of farming systems: analysis of problems in farming systems, and designing optimal durable farming systems. In the courses, fieldwork will go hand in hand with laboratory diagnosis and computer exercises. The BFS group focuses on project-oriented teaching activities.

Research

Our research aims to provide scientific support for continuous and sustainable development of agro-ecosystems with special reference to organic agriculture and reduced use of external inputs in both the Netherlands and abroad. Keywords are farming systems, recycling, and ecology. Our research program focuses on two complementary themes: component analysis and systems synthesis. The component-analysis theme includes three main research areas: nutrient cycling, crop-soil interactions, and spatial ecology. These areas provide building blocks for the systems-synthesis theme. The synthesis theme aims to address field-farm-landscape interactions and integrates processes at different temporal and spatial scales by using results obtained in the component-analysis theme.
